In January 2019, the SPCA called for 1080 to be banned on the grounds that its use is not humane and does not meet animal welfare standards.
This call sparked a wave of media commentary to which Marie McEntee, a co-founder of Synovus Technology and socio-environmental researcher contributed an opinion piece in Newsroomabout the need to rationally debate contentious pest control issues. Marie's article is reprinted here along with the SPCA's position on pest species and pest control.
Our Position
Our position on humane control includes the use of toxins. We are not opposed to the use of toxins for pest control, where they have been approved and registered for this use. However, we do not support the indiscriminate application of toxins, or their use outside their registration conditions.
